The Coppermaker Square Team Transforms The Well Community Centre
At Coppermaker Square, being part of the community isn’t just something we say, it’s something we show up for. In early May, Alessandro, Kelly, Jose, Valdiney and Sareena from our skilled maintenance and building management team spent two full days volunteering at The Well Community Centre in East Ham, run by our long-standing charity partner the Bonny Downs Community Association.
The Bonny Downs Community Association have been empowering local people in the London Borough of Newham since 1998, helping residents connect with neighbours, move through crisis, improve wellbeing, and celebrate life. Last year alone, they provided 63,079 hours of services accessed by 2,712 people speaking over 50 different languages.
The Well Community Centre is a busy, beloved community asset. Every improvement to the space helps Bonny Downs offer better facilities for hire and run their projects more effectively, and every penny of profit from those hires goes straight back into the community. The team redecorated the large training room, back-office corridor, a dedicated counselling room, and the storage room in the main hall. Our volunteers also identified that the toilet facilities in The Well Community Centre required attention. They returned the following day fully equipped and carried out repairs to leaks, a loose tap, and several other issues.

This was a comprehensive refresh that exceeded the original scope of the project and reflected the exceptional skill and dedication they brought to every task. A huge thank you to our general manager Dheraen Quick for coordinating the team, and to everyone who gave their time and expertise so generously.

Get Involved
Bonny Downs Community Association does incredible work in East Ham, from their food bank and toy appeal to youth clubs and community spaces. This summer they have plenty on, including the Go Wild! Summer Scheme for 8–14 year olds (17–28 August), free weekly Youth Sessions every Thursday term-time, and Sing & Stretch for Joy, a free dementia-friendly singing and yoga session every Tuesday at The WELLcome Hub.
They’re hosting a Welcome Hub Pop-Up Market this Friday 19th June, from 10am–1pm at 35 Vicarage Lane, E6 6DG with preloved clothes, cakes, jewellery, handmade items and a raffle (with a first prize afternoon tea at the Sunborn Yacht Hotel!). All proceeds from the raffle and market go directly towards Bonny Downs’ community projects.
If you’d like to volunteer, whether as an individual or as part of a corporate team, they’d love to hear from you. You can also sponsor and donate towards their Summer Scheme, from a £40 yoga session for 20 children to a £1,000 seaside day trip for 30 children. Every contribution makes a real difference.
