What to do in Stratford, East London this summer
There’s nothing quite like summer in the city. From canal-side strolls and picnics with friends to live music and open-air movie nights, Stratford, East London has it all. Here’s our guide to making the most of your free time this summer.
Like the sound of lazy days by the canal? Get down to Here East for free live music and special performances, every Thursday evening from 17 July. Grab an alfresco drink or dinner at one of the venue’s many restaurants and soak up the atmosphere.
- Catch a Movie
Like your films with city views and street food? Stratford’s ultimate open-air cinema at Roof East is screening movies all summer. With an eclectic program – from blockbusters like The Notebook and The Dark Knight to the new Minecraft Movie and the Euro 2025 Women’s Finals – there’s something for everyone.
And for Coppermaker Square residents who want to combine their workout with a film, our Pedal Powered Cinema – where viewers work together to power the experience – will take place on 18 & 19 September.
- Take to the Water
For a unique way to explore Stratford’s rich heritage, from industrial heartland to the London 2012 Olympics, book a guided boat tour along the River Lea. Want something more casual? Rent a swan pedalo and use your own steam to glide past iconic sites in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
- Celebrate Culture
Explore a diverse calendar of free cultural events in celebration of South Asian Heritage Month. Running from July to August, this year’s programme held at venues in and around Stratford, uses storytelling, performance and art to explore migration, memory and identity. Find out more.
Held over five days in nearby Victoria Park, All Points East is the highlight of the festival calendar for East London music fans. Whatever you’re into, there’s a line-up of acts for you, from electro duo Chase and Status and indie favourites The Maccabees, to pop sensation Rae.
- Get Outside
Stratford has some of the best green spaces in London – and summer is the perfect time to explore them. Take a scenic walk or relax with a picnic in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, or tire out the kids at its epic adventure playground, complete with tree houses and sand pits. To stretch the dog’s legs head to Hackney Marshes, a pooch paradise.
Fancy a challenge? Join your neighbours for an 18km circular hike of Wendover and the Chilterns Hills, enjoying peaceful woodland paths and spotting wildlife along the way. Either stop after 11km to relax in Wendover or complete the full 18km before kicking back with a much-deserved post-hike pint at a local pub.
